More Than Knots: Foundational Series

This 3-part series is designed for people who are new to rope bondage. Our instructors will teach foundational binding components and frictions, and show how to put them together to make creative, playful shapes. Those tying will develop skills in moving rope and bodies with confidence, fluidity, and intention. Those being tied will learn about risk-aware tying practices, practice communicating preferences in rope, and build some body awareness. Upon completing this series, attendees will possess basic safety principles and negotiation skills, plus be capable of learning and following along to harnesses/patterns in future learning environments.

Schedule

Tuesdays 7pm - 9pm

Class 1: June 2nd

Class 2: June 16th

Class 3: June 30th

These classes are crafted for partnered learning; attendees need to sign up in pairs. Tying pairs must commit to all three classes in the series.

Cost

$60 - $90 (sliding scale)

per tying pair, includes all 3 classes

Gear Requirements:

  • 2 to 3 hanks of rope that are 30ish feet in length. We recommend fibers like hemp, jute, POSH, or nylon. Stretchy or stiff ropes like cotton, silk, coconut, paracord, or climbing rope are not appropriate for this series. (Shibari grade jute rope sold at venue $30 = 30ft/ $15 = 15ft)

  • Safety shears or other appropriate cutting tool

  • Water bottle

  • Notebook and writing tool (optional)

  • Snack and blanket (optional)

Expectations:

  • Space for 15 tying pairs

  • Come dressed to move in comfy, snug-fitting clothing - loose, drapey clothes can present a challenge during lessons. Avoid wires, buttons, zippers, or anything else that may feel irritating underneath the rope. Consider bringing layers as the indoor heating system can be inconsistent or loud.

  • Exercises will be floor ties done either seated, kneeling, or standing. There are padded mats and chairs available for those who would like them.

  • There is one bathroom and a water cooler on site. Outside food is allowed.

  • Contact House of Knotty if you need accommodation assistance. We will do our best to create a space that facilitates learning for kinksters of all abilities and needs. The entrance can be reached via a ramp and elevator.

Instructor Details:

The Bight & Bind Collective has been teaching foundational, partnered rope classes since 2024. Our progressive curriculum helps people learn to tie and be tied from the first single column to the first suspension. There are four series of the curriculum, each building on top of each other to advance student's skill and understanding of rope. Our style is informed by Japanese heritages with emphasis on tight binding and minimalism. We are passionate about teaching in an adaptive, risk-informed manner to accommodate bodies of all sizes, abilities, and skills.
