This rope workshop will be a hand-on class with active participation and rope tying.

We will start by establishing aesthetic guidelines and principles for our ties as an overarching theme of the intermediate series. We will focus on a) modular tying, b) intentionality, c) nawajiri management, and d) philosophy of minimalism, model-centric photography, and wabi-sabi aesthetics.

The Merman class will include explicit instruction on:

  • Managing different types of reverse tensions

  • Managing frictions

  • Managing intentional bulk of a stem

  • Adding additional rope for an over-tied aesthetic of wabi-sabi (asymmetrical but balanced).

Prerequisites: Single column, experience with basic chest harness, basic understandings of tension and rope placement.

Requirements:  at least 10 hanks of rope at 20-30+ft in length.
